2014 CRF250R Fuel pump pressure
« on: February 07, 2021, 02:01:05 PM »
I’m troubleshooting a non starting bike. The fuel pump is only putting out 2 psi. Shouldn’t it be a lot higher than that?

I’ve already changed the fuel filter. Test was run with the tank off the bike using a 5v power supple?

I'm pretty sure you need 12 volts to run the pump properly.  You might want to check that out with a volt meter and see what it's supplying to the pump at the connector.   And yes 2 PSI is way too low but may be caused by running the motor at to low of a voltage.

I’ll test it again with 12v. I’m using an external power source so I can limit the test to just the pump mechanism.

Thanks!

So I’m getting 50 psi with a 12v battery from the fuel pump. Without the battery should I hear the fuel pump after a few kicks?

Sounds like your capacitor could be the issue.  But have you checked for spark?  Fuel filter clean?  If both of those check out. I’d look into the capacitor.   I am not sure if you can add 12v to the pump then try kickstarting it?

I’ll check the capacitor next. I’m getting a good spark, new fuel filter, adjusted the valves. And yes, I’m an idiot for buying a bike that wouldn’t start!

Here’s my understanding on how it’s supposed to work. Since there isn’t a battery you have to cycle the kick starter to power up the capacitor. Once charged the capacitor runs the fuel pump and injector until the bike starts. Once started it’s all powered by the magneto. So if it’s working correctly and I kick it over a couple time and charge the capacitor, the fuel filter should start. What about the Mil light? Should that light up as soon as the capacitor is charged or only after it starts? I think it’s supposed to light up for a bit then go off or start flashing a code.

This is from that years manual and may help.  It says the MIL should light up for a few seconds and then go off when you start the bike.

and here are the codes.

Thanks for that.

The bike won’t start so I can’t read the codes nor do I have the fancy testing equipment. I’m just trying to eliminate causes. I know the fuel pump works because I tested it with the tank off the bike. I think I’ll just check all the connections and if that doesn’t work, take it to the shop.

Did the seller tell you anything about any problems or recent 'service" they did?  That might be a clue.

You've got fuel...spark.....but what about good ol' O2?

Check your kill switch.   I had a similar problem on my '14 CRF450.  Replaced the kill switch and all better.

The bike was rebuilt over the summer. The owner was off at college so I dealt with his dad at his house. He was a nice guy and it was a nice house. I tend to believe what he told me. He said the kid bought it and it wasn’t.t running. Turns out. That it had Blown up so he had the engine professionally rebuilt. After that the kid road it over the summer. We’re in the Carolinas so no desert riding just local trails.

The dad said he started the bike before I got there But it wouldn’t start while I was there. It’d pop A bit like it wanted to start but never started. Rather then leaving I had him knock $400 off the price.

Just to level set, I replaced the fuel filter, air filter, adjusted the valves (intakes were a little tight). This is the first efi bike for me and I never saw the bike when it did run. That’s why I’m asking the general questions like ‘if you can hear the fuel pump after a few priming kicks’. If I was able to ride the bike before it crapped out i’d have a better idea what was going on.

I took the ohm meter to the kill switch and it passed.

The condenser tests good on the multimeter but the fuel Injector Resistance is 0 ohms. It should be 11.6 to 12.4. I need to verify the reading with a better meter.
