How do I get my grips to stick to the bars?
« on: August 10, 2009, 08:05:28 PM »
Im having trouble getting the grips to  stick really good to my bars especially on the clutch side.

Ive tried Scotts grip glue as well as Renthal grip glue (using a Scott grip) and it goes on good and tight, but after

one moto it slowly gets twisted around. Safety wired it with no help. Any other tricks Im missing?

I cleaned the bar real good with carb/ brake cleaner to get the glue off before I put the new grip on.

WTF?

I've had good luck with the Pro Taper instant set glue.  Just make sure you move quickly cause once that shit goes off, it goes off.  I used to have your same problem with the other types of glue too.

WD40 or paint works when they dry

I have use brake cleaner for years. a 3-4 sec shot of brake clean in the grip, slide it on (it will be real slippery at 1st, then in about 5 min its on there good.  I always add safety after just to be safe, but  it's great.

Gonna try the wd-40/ brake cleaner route and see how it goes.  Do I use grip glue also, or just
the solvent alone? thanx in advance.

Or nothing but spray paint.

With the paint and BC cleaner you can also remove with compressed air out a nozzle.

Protaper glue. Make sure when you clean the bar that there is no residue left on it from the solvents you used to clean it. That will cause the glue to not work and your grip to spin.

Too much glue - use a little less , it should almost go off before you get it on , you gotta work fast however . Try to ease up on the death grip too .

I use spray glue, spray paint or hair spray (in that order).  Except with Renthal grips because they seem to dissolve easy with chemicals so I use the Renthal glue.  I used to use safety wire but stopped a while back and haven't had any problems.  I'd worry about hairspray being water soluble.  On a wet day I could see it slowly working it's way down the grips.

grip glue and safety wire?. . . . no secret tricks, they never move.

Just make sure the bar is clean, usually clean the inside of the grip too. . . Don't use too much glue either or it wont hold to the bar.
