2003 CR250?
« on: November 15, 2017, 02:22:41 PM »

A friend has the opportunity to buy a 2003 CR250 from a co-worker for $1500. (not the one pictured)

Apparently it was used lightly as an trail/woods bike.

Is there anything he should be concerned about with that year CR?

Thank you.

03's have power valve issues and carb issues. If it runs and rides great just tell him to NOT mess with it and have fun. Good price.

Yeah pretty much carb issues. Hard to jet right from what I read.

I also have  an 03 CR250, and it has been very reliable (over 60 hrs on 2nd OEM piston) and original crank.  I think most people struggle with jetting on the Mikuni carb.  Since I only ride Moto (at LACR) I just have a winter and summer setting.  Regarding the servo unit for the PV, its not uncommon for the servo motor to go out, but easily replaced (EBAY) or just replace the actual DC motor for about $15.00.

Ripper could confirm the carb issues. He has an /06 he's been tweaking with for years.

Servo / cable operated power valve on the case reed engine can be a pain to keep adjusted right as well.

Stock carb, run it over with your truck.

Never had a problem with the carb or power valve. Ran a FMF fatty with a pc silencer, dropping one size on the main, dropped the needle one clip, and advanced the timing one notch. It was a ripper I ought to have kept.
Your buddy will have fun for sure.

$1500. Sounds like a killer deal. That would be a fun bike. Maybe send the motor to Varner to tweek it if that dude is still around.

On my 03 I swapped the TMX for a Keihen.
Another easy upgrade is to use a 05-07 base gasket, it's thinner than the 03 gasket and helps correct the overly large squish while lowering the ports a wee bit.

Thanks for all of the tips and tricks. My buddy got hitched a month ago and he just got a taste of marriage when he mentioned buying the aforementioned CR250 and his ol' lady said, "nope, not until we pay down some bills and move into an apartment with a garage to store it" :?
