Suspension fluid viscosity
« on: May 20, 2015, 10:17:37 AM »
Viscosity is one property worth considering when choosing your fork and shock oil.

I thought the forum might find this chart useful:

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=14&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CHQQFjAN&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.qemsc.com.au%2Fdocuments%2Fsuspensionoils.pdf&ei=579cVb3EN8vItQXDnIHwAw&usg=AFQjCNHWuT_QuPrCgj2HugHUYjoay74hfg&bvm=bv.93756505,d.b2w

I was really surprised by how similar the oils are at 100C/212F .

The viscosity at 40 degrees Celsius/105F varies a lot so choose your fork oil carefully.

Please post other references to lab analysis of suspension fluids if you have them.

I tend to stick with:

KYB 01M
Motorex 2.5
Maxima 5wt

Knowing how what oils are measured at what temp is about half the battle. Gear oils are measured at Room temp, engine oils are at 200F...etc. Thats how you end up with a 85wt gear oil thats the same as a 20w engine oil.

Have you ever tried that Smart Performance fluid? Its kinda like KYB stuff, but twice as slick. I like it.

Yeah he is, but he did send me some of his fluid a few years ago to try out for free. I felt the stuff worked pretty well, but smelled my whole garage up. The stuff smells terrible. We had some dialog and he was offering me to test some other stuff, but he never followed through. I think he is a bright guy, and looks at things outside of the box, but has absolutely no clue how to run a business.

I got some of that too. The new stuff is just as slick, but doesn't stank up the joint.

Dave has some unique ideas of what stuff is supposed to and how to get there. Personally, I think its just a matter of opinion. 2 stage mids and three stage bases with these weird ass clovers etc...but some guys like them.
