No holds barred critique. What did I do right/wrong?

Picked a live flower.

A little slower shutter speed to lighten it up just a little.  I didn't check the metadata though to see what it was shot at.

 The colors looked cool on the dead one. Today I started out trying to get a grasp on depth of field but I kept having to chase the light with the sun going in and out of the clouds.

a good shot and that lens is sharp as hell.

I think you could have opened it up a half to stop though.  Seems too dark.  BDW's version seems about right.
Me personally there is too much background in the shot, which distracts from the flower(though really nice blur).  I would have cropped tighter on to the flower...maybe a vertical shot.  If I kept with a horizontal shot, maybe moving the flower off center a bit would make things a bit more comfortable, but still cropping in closer.

Great work and thanks. I was thinking the same thing about cropping and the background distracting the shot. I think it would have been fine if the background was different colors, but since it matched it made the focal point drab. You and BDW really made the colors pop too. Thanks everyone for the input. I like learning this way.

I'd say in learning DOF you nailed it. Distracting background, and you put it completely out of focus and drawing all the emphasis to that dead phucking plant

I'll give it an A in the technical aspect of proper use of DOF.........other than that , I'll take the 5th

All BS aside, this is one of the assignments in most beginning photo class. "Show long & short DOF"

........so now let's see the opposite use.....

Oh and your ISO of 100 was just fine. I'd say 400th was plenty fast enough to catch a dead plant. 400 ISO would have put you at 1600th of a second.....no need for it, and you would have got a tad bit more noise in your shadow detail. Your exposure was dead on. You could add about 15 fill light in lightroom, or a tad of Shadow / Highlight in photoshop to bring the shadow detail up. But your histogram from that shot is dead nut.  8)

....oh and your color is more true to life, BD's is way to heavy on magenta.

I'm with Blue...for close up detail shots like this, ISO100 is good.  Hell...I remember shooting Velvia 100(even Velvia 50) in photo class for these types of subjects as to not get grainy shots.
