Im having trouble getting the grips to stick really good to my bars especially on the clutch side.
Ive tried Scotts grip glue as well as Renthal grip glue (using a Scott grip) and it goes on good and tight, but after
one moto it slowly gets twisted around. Safety wired it with no help. Any other tricks Im missing?
I cleaned the bar real good with carb/ brake cleaner to get the glue off before I put the new grip on.
WTF?
-
I've had good luck with the Pro Taper instant set glue. Just make sure you move quickly cause once that shit goes off, it goes off. I used to have your same problem with the other types of glue too.
-
WD40 or paint works when they dry
-
WD40/Aqua Net and a compressed air works for me
-
I have use brake cleaner for years. a 3-4 sec shot of brake clean in the grip, slide it on (it will be real slippery at 1st, then in about 5 min its on there good. I always add safety after just to be safe, but it's great.
-
Gonna try the wd-40/ brake cleaner route and see how it goes. Do I use grip glue also, or just
the solvent alone? thanx in advance.

With the paint and BC cleaner you can also remove with compressed air out a nozzle.

Protaper glue. Make sure when you clean the bar that there is no residue left on it from the solvents you used to clean it. That will cause the glue to not work and your grip to spin.
-
Too much glue - use a little less , it should almost go off before you get it on , you gotta work fast however . Try to ease up on the death grip too .
-
ya for anything make sure the bar is as clean as possible
-
Get a set of these ODI grips that clamp on.

I use spray glue, spray paint or hair spray (in that order). Except with Renthal grips because they seem to dissolve easy with chemicals so I use the Renthal glue. I used to use safety wire but stopped a while back and haven't had any problems. I'd worry about hairspray being water soluble. On a wet day I could see it slowly working it's way down the grips.
-
grip glue and safety wire?. . . . no secret tricks, they never move.
Just make sure the bar is clean, usually clean the inside of the grip too. . . Don't use too much glue either or it wont hold to the bar.

grip glue and safety wire
3 wire wraps on each grip.
1 inch in from the end and one at the beginning of the grip, 3rd one spiting the difference.
here is an awesome picture...

Thats great if you crash a lot, and bend bars more often than you change grips. But the whole point of grip glue is that u can get it off when you need to change grips

It is also very easy to cut the grips off with a razor blade just like you would do with any other grips that were put on with any other grip glue i've used it for 3 years and never had a problem...and i'm assuming that you have had issues using the gorilla glue and not being able to get the grips off hondadirtrider5? Since your really familiar with putting grips on and taking them off with gorilla glue...or your just assuming since I said that the stuff works well and no wire is needed
-
Getting the grip off is not the issue, getting the glue off the handlebar is when you will run into a problem. Most grip glue it will just peel off with your fingers or a quick hit with some contact cleaner and a rag.
Gorilla Glue is AMAZING stuff, use it all of the time. But in this situation its like cooking toast with a flamethrower

what the OG since '03 said. But I use flat black. any type of enamel paint seems not to last.

soo a question about the spray paint trick..
how much do i use? and do i spray it in the grip or on the bar itself?
im having trouble finding what works.

Just shoot a little spray into the grip, it doesn't take much, slide/pull the grip onto the bars and let it set.
Go for the cheap non enamel stuff if you have a can laying around

just curious....does this apply to grips that are for quads???? or does this work on MX bikes also?
-
Depends if your a track quad rider or not :|

spray paint....

Camel spit

Call kawasaki industries cuz there grips never come off the handle bar or the thotle tube

i doubted also until my last grip change... i grabbed an old can of paint and tried it... so smooth! much easier to get the grip on and position it correctly before it sets... they haven't moved a bit since... when I use glue they seem to rotate after a while but not now!
the only bad thing is it takes longer for them to dry and set... but if you do it the night before riding with them, there's no problem.
try it!

Like 99 cents at Wal Mart. One tube'll do a set of grips and you can hit the track 5 minutes after installation.
Gotta use a wire-wheel to get the old glue off the bars, though.
-

Just replaced my grips. Dayum glue works to good. Had a hell of a time getting my old grips off. Never spun and no safety wire.
-
Used protaper glue on some new grips. Worked like a champ, safety wired up with no slip.
Thanx again for all the replies.
-
spray paint
-
I've always used Liquid Nails. Never had a problem with that stuff.
-
I use rubber cement, but obviously theres plenty of stuff that works.
-
I use 3M super 77 spray adhesive.
http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/3M-Super-77/Super77/SprayAdhesive/Product-Information/
Works great for me without wire.
But don't even try to use the old hard stock Honda grips - those don't glue easily..not sure about other manufacturers.
-
spray paint
I tried it and works like a charm
you do have to add liberal amount and rotate it a few times and leave it alone
I also clean the bars real good , if there is anything
on the bar ill even use sandpaper
Clean the inside of the grip real good also
-
Several years ago I tried spray paint on Spider grips- they disintegrated before I got them lined up on the bars.
-
double sided type used to golf club grips.
three strips cut to length. use windex to deactivate the stickyness
let sit. go ride! ive tried to spin my grips and they wont budge..
can find it at a local golf shop

Fool proof method, easy, not messy:
Fill grip with approx. 1 tablespoon of lacquer thinner. Put hand over opening and agitate for about five seconds. Pour out thinner. Slide grip onto bars or throttle tube. Grip is now fixed solid.

One strand on clutch side, just in case. Rode a half dozen times w/o wire and no movement. Still, I decided since I had wire and pliers, why not be extra safe.

That will make it stay just fine. Safety wire works well if the grip gets ripped, it prevents the dirt from getting under the grip.

thinner is not sticky when it dries so how does it make the grip stay...............does it somewhat melt the rubber through chemical reaction?

It's the chemical reaction of the inside of the grip being melted by the thinner and once it re-cures it is bonded to the bars. Just make sure it's lacquer thinner and not paint thinner (mineral spirits). That stuff won't work. The same principle works with hair spray or spray paint.

Call Suzuki and ask them what glue they use on the throttle tube. That sh_t welds the grip on.

use super glue and it will melt to the bars.
yeah 4+ pages on this and you can't fiind a thing on shock service instructions. :?

Piss in them, if that doen't get them to stick at least they will stay on because you will not want to touch them.

I've been running these for years. Use an allen key to put them on. They never move, ready to ride in 20 secs.
The do NOT work with Pro Taper brand bars which have too much knurling. Works with all types of Renthal bars.

About 26 years ago and Long before I had a clue how to work on bikes, my friend asked me to go with him to the races and be his mechanic for the day. We had both just turned 16 so it was exciting to go without our parents. When he asked me to put on the the new grips, the only thing I could find was 409. They seemed to go on well and they weren't spining.
When the gate droped on the Shadow Glen track a Indian Dunnes, My buddy had the best start of his life but when he got to the first corner, I saw his left hand fly off. At first I thought he was giving a victory hand pump for the holeshot till I saw him go straight through the corner and crash. when I ran over to see if he was ok, all I saw was that grip still in his hand.
Till this day, every time a mechanic conversation comes up, I have to hear how I screwed up his best start ever. He now works at FMF, so you can imagine how often that comes up.

Start with a clean bar. Wrap it with cloth tape. Apply Gorilla glue. Twist on grip. Wipe off excess glue. Let it sit over night. Done.
Tip.
I remove my throttle tube when changing out that side. Keeps you from gluing it to the bar if glue seeps in.

I just learned that grips come inside out and you pull them on so the smooth side is out. No wonder grips spin when we all have been installing them wrong. Grip companies need to do a better job with the instructions, I mean it is pretty obvious now knowing the “grip” side towards the bars.
Now you know! 8)

You have two choices:
