Mushy front brake
« on: May 08, 2017, 03:36:14 PM »
Need some direction if anyone can help
New pads and fluid and the lever gets strong and grippy.  Seems to get spongey after about a day and a half.   I've done the zip tie to the handlebar trick and get the same results.   Not sure where to go next

Check the caliper glide pins. They need to be cleaned and greased once in a while, but no one (except me I guess) ever does it.

This and make sure the piston is clean, there's no scoring, and moves smoothly with no hang ups.

Post up what you find as the solution. Even though you changed out the oil and did the ty-wrap dealio there's always a possibility there is one last pain in the ass bubble that needs to bleed out. :x

Or the master needs to be rebuilt.

One thing that usually is the issue is the hose loops up and traps air. Make sure the hose is lower than the master.

To deal with that, remove the complete master cylinder/hose/caliper and hang it by the master cylinder from the rafters in the garage over night. That usually gets the bubbles to the right place.

Only one of the pistons comes through when I pump the lever.  I'll push that one back and hold it and the other one comes through,

Just push on the front brake caliper and spread the pads. This will 'reverse bleed' the system and allow trapped air to escape from the vent in the master cylinder. Pump the brake, good to go.

The brake line is probably failing internally. Ive seen them balloon over a 6-10 inch length of the line. When that happens, its impossible to get a decent lever.

After you've exhausted all this other stuff, replace the line itself.
