Does anyone cut down their bars?
« on: October 17, 2016, 08:13:50 PM »
I'm just curious if anyone has messed around with shortening their handlebars?
If so, how much do you go?
What are the benefits and drawbacks of narrowing them a bit?

In motocross/supercross, chopping your bars might stop you getting caught in people's back wheel:

Chopping your bars is good for riding between tight trees.
Wide bars can help increase leverage for riding at higher speed (desert).
If you had narrow shoulders, I guess you could chop them down for comfort, but I doubt I would feel the difference in a ten-minute knock-down drag-out REM/OTHG moto.

I always cut down my bars; one size does NOT fit all. Standard width is 32", I run 29" in the woods and 30" for motocross.

If you get down and do pushups to failure, allowing yourself to adjust your hand placement for maximum strength, you will find the width that works best for you. For small guys like me it will always be less than 32".

The benefits in the woods are obvious but you would still be amazed at how much difference even a half-inch makes when at speed through the trees.  https://vimeo.com/163260691

For motocross it's mostly just a matter of comfort and strength, but I also like a little more "breathing room" on the start line.

Thanks. I have a spare set of bars and just took off an inch on both ends. It may be a little drastic. I'm gonna try them at milestone this week...

34" wide Renthal Vintage Bends bars on the CZ. Wouldn't dare cut them down.

I measured my stock ktm bars. They are right at 32". The cut down ones are 30", with grips. I think they will be ok.

My ProTapers spec at 800mm wide or 31.4961 inches.  :?

Years ago I used to cut them because they came way too long, but not anymore with the various specs they offer.
